A Colorado native, Mark is a graduate of Colorado State University. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Technical Journalism from CSU in 1983.
Mark was also successful in making it into professional baseball as a pitcher. After completing his college playing career, Mark was a 3rd round draft choice of the Houston Astros out of CSU in June of 1982. He made Major League debut with Astros in July of 1985, and was a member of the 1986 NL champion Astros. He was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers in August of 1986, and was among team leaders in starts and innings pitched in 1990, including shut-out wins over the world champion Oakland A's and the Boston Red Sox in a ten-day span. Mark was the Brewers’ Opening Day starter in 1991 when he defeated Nolan Ryan and the Texas Rangers. During his career, Mark recorded wins over three of the four members of the “4,000 strikeout club,” including Ryan, Roger Clemens and Randy Johnson.
After spending a year in the San Diego Padres organization, Mark signed as a free agent with the expansion Colorado Rockies in October of 1992, and in May of the club’s inaugural season, he became the first Colorado native to play for the Colorado Rockies. Mark retired in May of 1993 after having played professionally for 12 years. He spent all or parts of eight seasons in the Major Leagues.
Mark’s career in the sports media began with work for AM 850 KOA radio, where he was the on-air host of Rockies Extra Innings, SportsWeekend, and fill-in host of The Sports Zoo from 1994-1996. He also did color commentary on 12 Colorado Rockies games on KOA in 1995. Later, Mark hosted radio and television programs, even being selected by the Boulder Daily Camera as the “Best Sports Talk Show Host in Denver market for 2001.” He remains one of Colorado’s six Heisman Trophy voters.
During this decade, Mark has been a feature writer and Contributing Editor for Mile High Sports Magazine, and managing Editor of The Cornhusker magazine, as well as on-air host for Mile High Sports TV and Mile High Sports Radio. Mark has also worked as a baseball studio TV analyst for Fox Sports Rocky Mountain.
Mark is currently the College Baseball studio analyst for ‘The Mtn’, the Mountain West Conference TV Network and continues to write a syndicated sports column, which runs in The Ft. Collins Coloradoan and three other regional newspapers. His column is in its 15th year and was recently picked up by the popular web site, Examiner.com.
